Prom 2012 : Bros, Tuxedos, and “The Last Minute Suit Sprint”

Prom suits - With prom season in full swing, there will be a similar ritual taking place in boutiques all across the country.

The “Prom Girl”, armed with her consultants, and of course a parent (unless she is lucky enough to gain use of the almighty credit card without parental supervision) will begin descending on stores for what is often her first large social dress purchase. After visiting numerous shopping sites, reading the latest Hollywood gossip mags, and contemplating different celebrity styles she will have an exact idea of which celebrity it is she would like to mirror.

With much thought, planning, consideration and research this shopping excursion will still take hours, at least. Maybe weeks, or months?

And for the Boy? Where is he shopping? Who is his entourage? How much thought has actually been put into the clothes part of the whole night? Exactly.  You certainly will not see gangs of bros spending hours picking out the perfect color accessories, suit or tuxedo style and shoes.

Black suits

Just like that other big day that will come, his wedding day, and numerous other important days on the male calendar, the outfit usually just doesn’t beat out such wonderful things as bachelor party, the limo, who’s party we’re going to and everything else us guys highly regard.

Lucky for the guys, there are some retailers are stepping up to make the hunt for a prom suit a simple process. Ezsuits and many other online retailers are currently offering tuxedo packages, suit packages, and other easy to order coordinating items that cost less than a rental. Etuxedo.com has a tuxedo for only $89.99. Here at Ezsuits.com , we also have tuxedos ranging from $79.00 (2 Button and 3 Button) and up.

The Canadian retailer Tip Top Tailor has promoted a deal on Facebook with a ‘Prom Squad’ contest, giving teen males a chance to win the suit package plus a $300 Visa gift card.

The Fitting

With hands fully extended, shoulders hunched back, fists tightened like the “Russian VS Rocky” throw down was imminent, the guys are understandably awkward for the most part. Besides, why wouldn’t they be? As a teen, we are definitely used to our school clothes, athletic outfits, maybe work clothes and casual long pants at the most for church outings with the family.  This is a whole new ball game, one interlaced with inseams, dress color coordination, jacket sizing, shiny shoes and a host of new things that are foreign to us guys at that age.

I see it all the time in our retail store, but since I’ve done this a thousand times plus I’ve been there I can usually make it an easy process. They act like they don’t care, but they do.  I know I did back then, but I understand the nonchalant “I don’t care how I look” attitude that I come across all of the time.  The best times are had  when everything is fitting correctly, and confidence if bubbling out of the person wearing the suit or tuxedo.  It’s the difference between a good and bad prom night! I’m not saying to go over the top, in fact a perfectly fitting 2 or 3 button tuxedo with a solid tie and white shirt can outdo the most extravagant ensemble, it’s all about fit and attitude/confidence.

I know how to make that happen.  Not because I have a gift from God, or because there is a secret that can do magic.  I am not even going to tell you that I am just the most talented Tailor in the world.  It’s only because I’ve been doing this since I was 10 in my father’s footsteps, and now 22 years later I find myself holding the same tailor’s measure and pins, with similar customers.

It’s all about one basic rule: Fit . It has to fit, and it has to fit in a complimentary way.  The good news is that your suit can usually be 2 to 4 inches too large or too small, and a tailor can still make you look like a million bucks.  The bad news is, most people are not willing to shell out the extra $30 or so to touch up the Jacket. Do it.  Trust me. This will be a suit / tuxedo that is far exceeding any other that you’ve worn.  I don’t care the material, it doesn’t matter.  You will stand out from the crowd. I remember doing a fashion show, and 11 models wore the exact same suit (different accessories and color).  3 of them had their jackets tailored, and the other 8 only had the hem done. We had 29 orders for the 3 suits that were tailored, only 3 orders for the other 8.
Last Minute Sprint

Waiting until Friday to buy a suit that you need to wear Saturday, or even worse waiting until Saturday (it happens, every year and often) is like waiting until you get to the date’s doorstep and deciding to clothe your naked body before you ring the doorbell (yes it is).  You are not going to be prepared.  You may look OK, and have clothes on at the proper second, but they certainly will not be memorable in a good way.  Your date went out of her way, the least you could do is go a week or so in advance to plan your combination of suit / tuxedo / accesories! It will pay off in the long run.

There are many things that ladies like, and you will be happy to learn early that being a well dressed and clean cut gentleman will get you many more dates and phone numbers than anything else at an early age!

Make sure you match your date in some way if possible, usually a matching vest, tie or something subtle such as a lapel flower. Just always remember one thing: No matter how good you look, your date is the main attraction of the night.
